Are Your Literacy Assessments Aligned with the Science of Reading?

What Your Literacy Assessments Should Include (But Probably Don’t!)

As a dedicated teacher or homeschooling parent, you understand the vital importance of assessing your students’ literacy skills. But with so many components to evaluate, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Comprehensive literacy assessments are more than just tests—they are a roadmap to understanding your students’ needs and guiding them to literacy success. As a Fellow in Training with the Orton Gillingham Academy, I know what should be included in a complete literacy assessment and why each component is crucial.

Gaps in Literacy Development & in Assessments

We’ve all been there—students who struggle with reading despite our best efforts. These gaps in literacy development often go unnoticed until they become significant obstacles in a child’s educational journey. Why? Because traditional assessments often miss critical components of literacy, leaving educators in the dark about where a child truly needs help. And when you’re trying to juggle giving 5 different assessments, the data collection and analysis is just too much.

Science of Reading-Based Assessment

I understand the frustration of not having the right tools to properly assess your students’ literacy skills. I used to use 5-6 different assessments to make sure I was assessing each needed skill. Papers were everywhere and I was overwhelmed at the end trying to synthesize all the student data. Sound familiar?

That’s why I created a comprehensive Science of Reading Assessment, designed to give you a clear, complete picture of your students’ abilities.

This assessment aligns with the science of reading, a comprehensive body of research that explains how children learn to read. It doesn’t just skim the surface—it digs deep into every crucial component of literacy. There is a Form A and a Form B so you can progress monitor throughout the year as well! Here is what is included:

Skills Assessed in Comprehensive Literacy Assessments:

1. Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words. It’s the foundation of literacy. Without strong phonemic awareness, students struggle to connect sounds with letters, which is essential for decoding.

Why Phonemic Awareness Matters: Research shows that phonemic awareness is a strong predictor of reading success. My assessment ensures you can identify students who need additional support in this area early on. By providing only 5 minutes a day of targeted phonemic awareness instruction, your students can move on to be successful, fluent readers.

2. Phonics

Phonics instruction teaches the relationship between letters and sounds. Our assessment covers a wide range of phonics skills from simple letter sound correspondences to consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words and to even more complex patterns like vowel teams and diphthongs.

Why Phonics Matters: Mastery of phonics is crucial for fluent reading and accurate spelling. By assessing these skills, you can pinpoint exactly where a student is struggling and provide targeted instruction to fill in those gaps. When provided with explicit phonics instruction, students learn to orthographically map words for long-term, automatic word recognition.

3. Decoding

Decoding is the ability to apply phonics knowledge to read words. My comprehensive assessment includes a variety of decoding tasks (real words, nonsense words, oral reading) that increase in complexity, ensuring that you have a clear understanding of a student’s decoding abilities.

Why Decoding Matters: Decoding is directly tied to reading fluency. Without it, students cannot read with accuracy or speed. Our assessment helps you ensure your students are on the right track.

4. Sight Word Recognition

While phonics is essential, some irregular words don’t follow standard decoding rules. These irregular words must be orthographically mapped to become sight words. Our assessment includes a sight word component to ensure you know which words to teach and help your students master.

Why Sight Word Recognition Matters: Sight word recognition contributes to reading fluency and comprehension. The quicker students can recognize these words, the more fluent their reading will be.

5. Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is one of the main goals of learning to read. We must assess our students’ comprehension to ensure that they are understanding what they read.

Why It Matters: If students are not comprehending, they are likely either spending too much mental energy decoding, or they have underlying oral language deficits. As an expert teacher, you will want to address either of these areas if you find holes in your students’ comprehension.

6. Written Expression

Communicating one’s thoughts in written form is one of the most difficult tasks we require of our students. They must juggle numerous tasks when writing including handwriting, pencil grip, spelling, organization of thought, syntax, grammar, semantics, and more. Our assessment includes an opportunity for students to write so you can better plan your instruction.

Why It Matters: Student writing samples provide you with a wealth of knowledge! You can look student errors in all components and scaffold your instruction to address your student’s needs.
