Fluency Routines

Practical Fluency Activities that Actually Work

Now that we understand the why from Part 1 of the Fluency blog post, let us talk about the how.

The strongest fluency routines have three things in common:

  • They provide multiple supported reads
  • They include purposeful performance
  • They increase reading volume across varied texts

Below are classroom-ready reading fluency routines & structures grounded in research and real classrooms.

1. The 5-Read Fluency Cycle (Whole Group or Small Group)

This comes from the “Read Like Us” protocol.

Day 1: Model Read (Listening Passage Preview)
Teacher reads aloud while students track.
Students hear phrasing, pacing, expression.

Day 2: Echo Read
Teacher reads a sentence. Students echo.

Day 3: Choral Read
Students and teacher read together.

Day 4: Partner Choral Read
Students read together in pairs.

Day 5: Performance
Students perform sections aloud (not round robin).

Why this works:

  • Research supports at least four readings for optimal growth.
  • Listening preview increases fluency outcomes.
  • Performance adds authenticity and motivation.

And most importantly, responsibility gradually shifts from teacher to student.

2. Partner Reading With Structured Coaching

Teachers intentionally pair students based on fluency data. I recommend numbering your students based on their fluency data and pairing students with the “highest” and the middle student.

So, that might be student #1 paired with student #10 (in a classroom of 20 student). Then student #2 paired with student #11 and so on.

One student reads first.
The partner rereads the same portion (gaining preview benefit).

Then they switch.

Make sure to explain in this fluency routine:

  • Clear error correction procedures
  • Tracking with a finger
  • Explicit coaching language

Why this works:

  • High volume of oral reading
  • Immediate feedback
  • Reduced cognitive load for struggling readers

Two weeks of structured partner reading led to significant WPM growth in one classroom example.

3. Reader’s Theater (With Real Purpose)

Performance changes everything!

When students know they will perform:

  • They reread with intention
  • They attend to phrasing
  • They focus on expression
  • They care

Reader’s Theater aligns beautifully with repeated reading research.
Teachers across grades share with me how weekly performances transform engagement.

Important note:
Do not force reluctant students to perform solo. Use groups or have them choral read during the performance.

4. Sing It

Yes. Sing it.

Prosody develops naturally through rhythm and melody.

Poems. Song lyrics. Repeated refrains.
These are powerful prosody builders.

5. Build Fluency Inside Your Knowledge Units

Instead of isolated fluency passages:

  • Use texts connected to science and social studies.
  • Use sets of related passages on the same topic.
  • Let vocabulary repeat across readings.

This strengthens both strands of the rope.

Final Thoughts

Fluency is not a side skill.
It is not test prep.
It is not speed practice.

Fluency is the outcome of strong foundational skills braided with language comprehension.

At some point, our strands must become a rope.

When we design instruction that layers:

  • Decoding
  • Vocabulary
  • Knowledge
  • Syntax
  • Repeated reading
  • Wide reading
  • Performance

We do not just create faster readers. We create readers who can think.

And that is why fluency matters.
